Fascinating destination
Socotra is a tiny archipelago of four islands and islets in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa, about 350 kilometers south of the Arabian peninsula. It is apparently one of the most remote land mass on the earth. Like the Galapagos Islands, this island is teeming with 700 extremely rare species of flora and fauna, a full 1/3 of which are highly unique and found nowhere else on the earth. Socotra is home to more than 800 species of plants where the climate is harsh, hot and dry.

The Socotra Archipelago Conservation and Development Programme (SCDP), is an effort of the Republic of Yemen to conserve and develop in a sustainable way the island of Socotra and its neighboring smaller islands. The SCDP was supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Governments of the Netherlands, Italy and Poland in partnership with a pool of International Donors and NGOs. in its current phase (2003-2008) is mainly supported by UNDP and Italy
The main aim of the SCDP is to coordinate all government and donor efforts towards sustainable human development for the people of the Socotra Archipelago, while conserving the globally significant biodiversity of these unique islands.
In July 2008 Socotra was recognized by (UNESCO), as a World Natural Heritage Site. The European Union supported such a move, calling on both UNESCO and IOPE (International Organization of Protecting Environment) to classify the island archipelago among the world’s environmental heritages, and natural wildlife refuge.
